Stuart Penn - Framestore
Stuart read Physics and worked as a research physicist for 10 years before joining Framestore as a CG artist on the award-winning mini-series Dinotopia. He has worked on numerous projects as model supervisor, lighting supervisor and environment supervisor, including the digital oil refinery Hell's Gate on James Cameron's Avatar, the Hong Kong sequence of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, the development of the Extremis effect for Marvel's Iron Man 3 and the Knowhere environment for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He was CG sequence supervisor on Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, being part of the project from the very beginning. He helped develop the techniques needed to shoot zero gravity scenes, working with motion control robots and the innovative LED lighting stage known as the lightbox. After helping supervise the shoot he was one of the film's lighting leads. Stuart's passion for CG challenges has led to an impressive list of credits and a wealth of experience in modelling, lighting, motion control and shoot supervision. His broad technical knowledge enables him to bring innovative solutions to any brief. More recently, Stuart has held the role of CG Supervisor on Joe Wright’s 2015’s Pan,Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, and Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. The VFX of “Alien : Covenant”
Framestore teamed up with Ridley Scott on the highly anticipated science-fiction horror Alien : Covenant, released in summer 2017. After winding back the clock on the Alien universe with 2012's Prometheus, Covenant continues the story with some ground-breaking VFX work by the Framestore team. VFX supervisor Stuart Penn will take us through the reimagining of cult creatures including 'The Facehugger' and 'The Chestburster,' as well as some stunning environment work and the build of the Covenant ship itself.
