Crossing the uncanny valley with Harry Potter Nicolas Scapel, Head of VFX Rigging Department, Framestore On Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Framestore was presented with the daunting challenge of delivering a fully believable, intense and emotional performance on two well known humanoid characters, Dobby and Kreacher. Hear how they crossed the uncanny valley by leveraging the Framestore know-how on realistic CG characters, and pushing it to a new level, both on the technical and artistic front. Animation and rigging drove the creature development process, which involved careful modeling of hundreds of detailed facial shapes, new rigging techniques, complex skin layers, simulations, advanced dynamic shaders, a rich animation performance, extensive us of witness cams, anatomy and 3D scan reference, and overall many iterations on the look, feel and acting of these two creatures to turn them into living, breathing and thinking characters. |
