Going into the 21st century, animation is the most under-used art form, the only art form in which its leading artists are invisible to the public. This is primed to change. There are new avenues for financing, distribution and exhibition. It is not the case that every graduating animation student must get in line outside the Disney employment office. The industry is truly global, wired up, and films can originate anyplace. Ed describes the scene and points to pathways that are open for creative and entrepreneurial animators.

Ron will be discussing the challenges and opportunities the Atomhawk team faced in creating concept art for Marvel blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy. He will share the creative decisions behind the design of key features including the Milano spacecraft, the Kiln Prison and the Knowhere head and what it’s like to be tasked with the reimagining of a new Marvel franchise.

Greg Fisher Animation Supervisor, MPC
MPC Animation Supervisor and Teesside graduate Greg showcases the team’s work on the extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature Groot from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Bringing Groot to life was both an artistic and technical challenge, requiring a complex rigging system and variations including Groot Cocoon and Baby Groot.

Stafford Lawrence of Double Negative discusses the animation processes involved in making Exodus: Gods and Kings. From blood thirsty crocodiles and infestations of frogs, to exhausted Hebrew slaves and swarms of locusts, this talk will show you the many approaches required to bring Ridley Scott's epic retelling of the biblical story of Moses to life.

LAIKA is a renowned animation studio that has inspired audiences with an unprecedented visual artistry. This unparalleled fusion of stop-motion and computer graphics has garnered the studio two Oscar nominations and worldwide acclaim. Mark will discuss the recently released feature The Boxtrolls, using rarely seen images and time-lapses. Production puppets will also be on display.
4:00pm Big Hero 6: finding the character
Zach Parrish Head of Animation, Walt Disney Animation Studios
Zach discusses the process the animation department underwent from the beginning of Big Hero 6 to the production of shots including; pre-production, visual development, modelling, rigging, posing, and character exploration. He will focus on the challenges of the film including the large cast of main characters, the city of San Fransokyo, filling it with crowds, and the variety of animation needed for the film from subtle to action to Baymax.
