Animex Screen is back with some of the best animated films from across the globe to screens in and around Middlesbrough.

The 2015 programme mixes the abstract and experimental to established classics, and gives you the opportunity, regardless of your age, to see films that you might otherwise never get the chance to see.

The schedule includes choice selections of acclaimed international shorts and features from the festival circuit, special guest screenings, informative documentaries and the very best in student animation from around the world as we welcome back the Animex Awards.

The week begins with the Features for Families screenings at Cineworld Middlesbrough on Sunday 8 February where kids can bring along their parents and watch their choice of films for free.

Throughout the week you can view the best of international student animation submitted to the Animex Student Awards and see who takes home one of the prizes at a special screening of the winners at Cineworld on the evening of Tuesday 10 February.

This year we are pleased to welcome a guest-curated programme of Abstract Animated Short Films from our friends at the Melbourne International Animation Festival. It's an eclectic mix of some of the most experimental, innovative and expressive abstract films being produced today.

Our usual collection of some of the finest professional animation being shown on the festival circuit in our International Animated Short Films programme features several award-winning and acclaimed films.

Two excellent documentaries are also included in the programme. The first is VALVE's Free to Play, which focuses on the world of international E gaming competitions. It follows three professional video game players as they overcome personal adversity, family pressures, and the realities of life to compete in a $1m tournament that could change their lives forever.

The second documentary is the excellent Mami Sunada film The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness. Sunada follows key personnel at Studio Ghibli - director Hayao Miyazaki, producer Toshio Suzuki and the elusive "other" director, Isao Takahata - over the course of a year as the studio rushes to complete their two highly anticipated new films, Miyazaki's The Wind Rises and Takahata's The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. The result is a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the most celebrated animation studios in the world, and a portrait of their dreams, passion and dedication that borders on madness. For lovers of the wonderful films of the masters of Japanese animation this is a must-see.

Animex Screen 2015 closes in fitting fashion with the wonderful The Boy and the World by Ale Abreau. This delightful and visually stunning film was the winner of the Annecy Crystal for best film in 2014. This amazing Brazilian animation, with its simple graphic child-like style, truly exemplifies the power of imagery and music portraying a powerful and deep message. It shows an adventurous quest that illustrates the issues of the modern world through the eyes of a child. A cautionary tale of globalization, The Boy and the World teaches above all the dangers of the massification of the economy, of the mind, and of the soul. This is one you do not want to miss.

The screenings take place daily at Cineworld Multiplex in Middlesbrough and Teesside University campus. They are free of charge, unless otherwise stated.

Check the programme to see what is happening when, reserve your place at a screening and look at the website regularly for announcements of any surprise screenings.

With such an eclectic mix of fine films you can be sure that whatever your taste in animation there will be something for everyone at Animex 2015.

6:30pm The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness
Mami Sunada | Japn | 2013 | 118mins
There have been numerous documentaries about Studio Ghibli made for television and for DVD features, but no one had ever conceived of making a theatrical documentary feature about the famed animation studio. That is precisely what filmmaker Mami Sunada set out to do in her first film since her acclaimed directorial debut, Death of a Japanese Salesman. With near-unfettered access inside the studio, Sunada follows the key personnel at Ghibli - director Hayao Miyazaki, producer Toshio Suzuki and the elusive 'other' director, Isao Takahata - over the course of approximately one year as the studio rushes to complete their two highly anticipated new films, Miyazaki's The Wind Rises and Takahata's The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. The result is a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the most celebrated animation studios in the world, and a portrait of their dreams, passion and dedication that borders on madness.
