All workshops on offer are now detailed below.

Creative visualisation: Ken Wong

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - Workshop full

Creative visualisation, also known in non-fancy words as 'concept art', is all about coming up with ideas and being able to draw them clearly and awesomely for other people to see. You'll learn techniques for producing bigger, more interesting and more varied ideas and how to get them down on paper clearly and rapidly, through a series of brainstorming exercises, sketch sessions and assignments.

But is it fun? Alex Trowers

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - 40 places

It may have an epic storyline, use the latest incarnation of the Awesomesauce Omni-Engine and feature voice talent from beyond the world of daytime TV, but is it actually any good to play? Gameplay is the silver bullet. It's what keeps players coming back after the warm, post-purchase glow has subsided, the achievements have all been gathered and the credits have rolled. It's that 'just one more go' feeling that takes you well beyond bedtime and causes you to flunk college. This workshop aims to show how gameplay can be extracted from just about everything around you. It is also really good fun to play.

Photoshop Techniques Crash Course: Jim Zubkavich

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - 20 places

Jim Zubkavich, Project Manager at UDON Entertainment, talks about some of the basic working methods for digital art that he and his crew use in their work for companies like Capcom, Warner Brothers, Sony, Hasbro and Blizzard. The workshop includes a run through of digital colouring/painting fundamentals as well as a block of time for portfolio reviews. A basic understanding of Photoshop and Wacom tablets is required for this session.

MASTERCLASS: An Organic Approach to Visual Effects: Joseph Gilland

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - 15 places

Joseph Gilland's powerful visual effects masterclass brings participants back to the underlying principles that drive all the elements (and all quality animation), and opens their eyes to the world of natural visual effects surrounding us in our everyday life. A class of vital importance for both 2D and CGI visual effects artists - who often miss out on learning about the organic study of natural visual effects, and over 80 years of classical special effects animation insight into what makes special effects 'special'. Participants are encouraged to make observation, experimentation and invention a much bigger day to day part of their visual effects toolbox. Elemental Magic opens the door to vastly improving every effects element an animation artist is called upon to create!

Flight School with Stuart Sumida

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - 15 places

Fusiform organisms that slip through water or air at the same time are some of the most anatomically simple and yet deceptively complex to animate. Based on the training regimen animators went through at DreamWorks Studios on the film How to Train Your Dragon, known as 'flight school', as well as the birds in Blue Sky's Rio, this workshop takes participants through the physics, anatomy, rigging and animation of characters that fly through the air and swim through the water.

MASTERCLASS: Character Animation with Eric Goldberg

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - Workshop full

Industry veteran Eric Goldberg will spend the day discussing creative and technical aspects of animation including acting, timing, spacing, exposure sheets, keys and breakdowns. Geared towards the needs of the individual animator and based upon the viewing of their work. It will be informal and conversational, with crosstalk from attendees highly encouraged! All attendees are advised to bring portfolios and reels for some priceless feedback from one of the modern masters of animation.

The ABCs of alpha and gamma: Scott Johnston

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - 15 places

This workshop will provide artists with background on technical issues that come up when generating and compositing digital artwork. You will gain insight into terms like alpha and gamma as well as an understanding of graphics problems that need to be overcome: aliasing, contouring, banding, as well as common compositing pitfalls when working with animated elements, including dealing with pre-multiplied and non-premultiplied imagery, linear vs non-linear composition, colour calibration and colour profiles.

Students working in the digital arts should be familiar with these concepts to avoid common rendering and compositing mistakes.

Writing for film: Scripts That Sell: Andy Ross

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - 40 places

As an experienced script mentor Andy will detail the industry secrets of how a good screenplay works and will give tips on how successful writers make their scripts more fulfilling to an audience.

MASTERCLASS: Acting for Animators: Ed Hooks

9.30am - 4.30pm (lunch break 12.30pm - 1.30pm) | One session (full day) - 20 places

This workshop covers essential acting theory, scene construction, characterisation and the mechanisms of empathy. Mainly through lecture, discussion and analysis of scenes from animated and live-action films, you learn the connections between thinking, emotion and physical action, the differences between theatrical reality and regular reality, perspectives on comedy and drama, heroes and villains and the expression of emotion in the human face.
