Sylvain Chomet | UK | FRANCE | 2010

The Illusionist is the latest film from Sylvain Chomet, the Oscar-nominated and critically acclaimed creator of The Triplets of Belleville. Adapted from a Jaques Tati script and brought to life in his distinctive hand-drawn animated style. The Illusionist is one of a dying breed of stage entertainers. With emerging rock stars stealing his thunder in the late 1950s, he is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in bars and cafes. Then, while performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl, who will change his life forever.

Animex Feature: Chico & Rita 7.00pm, Cineworld, Middlesbrough

Javier Mariscal, Chris Fernando Trueba | SPAIN | UK | 2010

Join us at Cineworld for the perfect film to heat up a cold February night. Oscar-winning director Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque) and Spain's most famous and successful designer Javier Mariscal celebrate their passion for the music and culture of Cuba with an epic story of love and heartbreak, set against the colour and bustle of Havana, New York, Las Vegas, Hollywood and Paris in the late 1940s and early '50s.

Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unite them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment.

With an original soundtrack by legendary Cuban pianist, bandleader and composer Bebo Valdés, Chico & Rita captures a definitive moment in the evolution of jazz music. The film features music by jazz legends Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie and Freddy Cole (brother of Nat King Cole).
