Dr Stuart Sumida

Professor of Biology
California State University San Bernardino

Professor Stuart Sumida Dr. Stuart Sumida is a Professor of Biology at California State University San Bernardino. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1987, and taught in the Department of Anatomy and the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago from 1988-1992. He moved to CSUSB in 1992. He is a comparative anatomist and paleontologist who specializes in the biomechanics and evolution of locomotion. In addition to his position at CSUSB, he is also a research associate at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. He is the author of three books and approximately fifty publications on the anatomy of living and extinct amphibians, reptiles, and synapsids (the lineage leading to mammals). The animals and assemblages he studies lived during the Late Pennsylvanian to Early Permian, predating the earliest dinosaurs by 50-80 million years. They include some of the earliest reptiles and their close relatives. His work has taken him throughout North America as well as central Germany where he and his colleagues are studying one of the earliest completely terrestrial ecosystems ever discovered. His research has been funded by the National Geographic Society and NATO. His teaching focus is primarily on comparative vertebrate anatomy and human anatomy. He also teaches a course on dinosaurs. He has been an anatomical consultant to special effect artists and animators at Walt Disney Feature Animation, DreamWorks, Warner Brothers, Rhythm and Hues, SONY Pictures ImageWorks, Walt Disney Imagineering, and others. His work in the animation and special effects industries began with Beauty and the Beast and Lion King, and has included Mulan, George of the Jungle, the live action versions of 101 and 102 Dalmatians, Tarzan, Stuart Little, Cats and Dogs, and Harry Potter. He consulted on five feature films that were released last summer: Lilo and Stitch, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Scooby Doo, Stuart Little II, and Reign of Fire. This fall his work on Disney’s Brother Bear will be in cinemas. He is currently working on Shrek II and three other projects for DreamWorks Feature Animation.

Stuart is married to Elizabeth Rega, another anatomist, who is an assistant professor of Anatomy at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. They often like to say they met over a dead body at the University of Chicago. They have one son, Darwin, who is two years old and an excellent example of blending inheritance. When Darwin lets him, Stuart teaches aikido and pursues his other interests in the martial arts.
